Managing Files

Files, files, everywhere!

The Files feature in Canvas is similar to the file manager on your computer and its function is to store all of the files used in your course.  It is important to note here that there is a difference between personal files and course files.  Personal files are global to your account and are housed in the Files area of your Account/Profile/Personal Settings while course files are course specific and are housed on the Files page in your course.

Using the Files tool is also an easy way to share course files with students because all of the files you upload are open to students by default.  If you do not want students to have access the Files page of your course simply remove it from your course navigation tool bar.  However, doing this alone will not completely lock students out of your files.  If you have sensitive files that are not for student eyes, you should use the file/folder locking feature.

Any files uploaded to Files will auto-populate into the Content Selector menu in the text editor so course building is a breeze.  If you prefer to upload files as you build your modules, individual files can also be uploaded directly to a module using the Content Selector in Canvas.

After exploring the Guides link, return to Canvas and click the "Next" button at the bottom right of the page to move to the next section of the module.

TIP: To keep your course files organized, be sure to select the correct destination folder if you are using the Content Selector in the Rich Content Editor to upload your files instead of using the Files tool.
