Welcome to CNVS-101!

Congratulations, you are about to embark on an adventure in learning that will help prepare you to use the Instructure-Canvas-logo.jpg learning platform!

What is this course about?

This course is designed for instructors who have never used the Canvas learning management system or who are just getting started. By the end of the course you should have a basic understanding of the Canvas tool set and be ready to begin using Canvas with your classes - regardless of whether you intend to teach online fully or simply move a portion of your activities and lectures online.

The course was originally designed to be completed working for about an hour a day, five days a week for two weeks.  As a busy working professional and having taken several 2 week courses myself, I have added a third week of flex time to our course that can be used as a buffer if you get behind on the class or if you have any scheduling complications.

Who is the instructor?
My name is Jacqueline Staley and I'll be facilitating this course.  The goal is to work on an actual class while you train, thus accomplishing two tasks at the same time. Please email me with the name of the course you wish to use while training and I will create your first master class under that name.

What browser should I use?

Before you get started, please note that Canvas and Internet Explorer (IE) are not known for playing politely together, therefore IE is not a recommended browser (you will experience the most problems with IE than any other browser). The browser Canvas developers recommend is Chrome, but things work fine with Firefox and Safari as well.

What should I do first?

The course is divided into modules. Please begin by reading and doing the following:

  • Click around and familiarize yourself with the tools and layout of the course...no worries, you can't break anything!
  • Read the syllabus located in the Syllabus tool.
  • Read all of the course announcements in the Announcements tool.  The announcements are listed by date, so please start reading at the bottom and work your way up.
  • Click on the Modules tool from the vertical course navigation tool bar to your left and check out all of items in Module 01. You will do all the first-day-of-the-class things here like learn about the instructor, introduce yourselves to each other, learn basic communication skills and how to submit assignments, etc.
  • Remember to participate in the introductory activity in Module 01.
  • Check out the Support and Resources module for additional course resources.
  • Watch the one minute introduction to Canvas video below.
