Course Description
Purpose of Course
The purpose of this course is to prepare you to communicate with healthcare professionals. Medical Terminology enables health professionals from different field, different specialties, and different countries to communicate clearly and precisely with each other. Each profession has its own language.
This course is taught entirely over the Internet. Students are required to log in the course and complete assignments for each module. It is advisable to check the website frequently for any changes or additions. Students may access the website 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Course Outcomes
Upon Completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- define, pronounce, and spell medical terminology
- explain how learning medical terminology will increase the ability to communicate effectively with the health care team.
Objectives
- identify and define the four-word parts in medical terms.
- build medical terms for given definitions.
- define medical terms and abbreviations for all body systems.
- spell medical words that have been pronounced.
Late Assignment & Make-up Work Policy
Late Assignment & Make-up Work Policy
Timeliness is expected of students as it would be in the professional workplace. All late assignments and tests will receive a zero and no points will be awarded unless prior written consent is given by the instructor.
If you fail to submit assignments or exams by the due date, that item will earn a 0%.
Grading Policy & Scale
Students can access grades within Canvas by clicking the Grades link on the left side menu until the end of finals week.
A = 100 to 94% A- = 93 to 90%
B+ = 89 to 88% B= 87 to 82%
B - = 81 to 80% C+= 79 to 78%
C = 77 to 72% C- = 71 to 68%
D = 67 to 64% < 64% Failing
Course Requirements
Completion of ALL assignments and examinations by the assigned due date. A final course grade of 72%, a C, or better is required to pass all Allied Health courses.
Exams: 80%
Examinations will be completed using a proctoring software called Proctorio, and timed. Timing will allow adequate time for completion, but ensure the material must be studied.
Exams must be completed by the assigned due date. Students will not be allowed to make up an exam.
Homework: 20%

These assignments are considered to be study tools. It will be open book and may be taken an unlimited number of times to maximize your grade.
Connect Practice Exams
The practice exams in this course are considered to be study tools. Practice exams will be open book, times and may be taken two times to maximize your grade. You are encouraged to do the 1st attempt early in the assigned week to help guide your study. Taking the practice exam attempts at least 24 hours apart with study in between the attempts will maximize their usefulness in assisting you to master the competencies.
Each of these assignments must be completed according to the directions for each assignment by the assignment due date. Late work will not be accepted.
Plagiarism
Presenting work done by someone else from any source is plagiarism. Plagiarism is the same as stealing or lying and is not be tolerated. Submitting work written by another person, published or not, and claiming it as your own is considered plagiarism. The first incidence of plagiarism will result in the student receiving a “0” for that assignment. Any subsequent occurrence may lead to a failure of the course and ineligibility to continue in any Allied Health Technology course, certificate or degree.

Washington state law SB 5166 requires that YVC provide accommodation for student absences or significant hardships due to reasons of faith or consciences, of for organized religious activities. Resources:
The college provides access to a writing lab and tutoring center. Check the YVC Writing Center website for days and times to obtain help with your rough drafts.
Acceptable Format
All work must use word-processing. Work in hand-written format is not acceptable. Visual appeal and format is important in final works submitted.
