Purpose of Course
The purpose of this course is to prepare you to communicate with healthcare professionals. Medical Terminology enables health professionals from different field, different specialties, and different countries to communicate clearly and precisely with each other. Each profession has its own language.
This course is taught entirely over the Internet. Students are required to log in the course and complete assignments for each module. It is advisable to check the website frequently for any changes or additions. Students may access the website 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Course Outcomes
Upon Completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- define and spell medical terms.
- construct and deconstruct medical terms in order to multiple define medical terms.
Objectives
- identify and define the four word parts in medical terms.
- build medical terms for given definitions.
- define medical terms and abbreviations for all body systems.
- spell medical terms accurately.

The following medical assisting competencies are met in this course:
- V.9 Identify medical terms, labeling the word parts
- V.10 Define both medical terms and abbreviations related to all body systems
Grading Policy & Scale
Students can access grades within Canvas by clicking the Grades link on the left side menu until the end of finals week.
All students in the course will be held to college level writing skills. Written communication is expected to be respectful and professional, as this would be expected from any healthcare professional in the workplace.
No late examinations may be accepted for credit. All examinations are taken through McGraw Hill Connect.
Assignments: 20% (quizzes, discussions, written assignments, learnsmart activities)
Tests: 80% (5 total exams)

Late Assignment & Make-up Work Policy
Timeliness is expected of students as it would be in the professional workplace. All late assignments and tests will receive a zero and no points will be awarded unless prior written consent is given by the instructor.
If you fail to submit assignments or exams by the due date, that item will earn a 0%.
Instructor Availability
Although I would like to be there at the exact time you have a question, I guarantee you won’t find me sitting in front of my computer at midnight. If you have questions please post a message or question for me in the Canvas Inbox and I will respond within 24 hours, except weekends or holidays. I would recommend, if you have an assignment due on the weekend, or if you know you will not be able to work on an assignment until the weekend, that you post any questions to me before 12:00 noon on Friday.

I am not on campus during the summer, so please do not call me on my campus phone number.
Since we don’t meet face to face, I do not always know if you have a question or need assistance unless you tell me. The very best way to communicate with me is in the Canvas Inbox.
Honesty and Integrity
Health care professions require a high degree of honesty and integrity. Students are expected to conduct themselves in the classroom (both online and on campus) as they would in the place of employment. Because knowledge gained in the classroom, lab, or externship directly impacts the student’s future ability to safely provide patient care, all breaches of ethical behavior are considered extremely serious. Violations of ethical standards may result in immediate dismissal from the program.
Students shall:
- complete all examinations using only their own knowledge. Students shall not refer to others’ answers, other students, old examinations, class notes, or other references while completing the examination unless specifically permitted by the instructor.
- use their own knowledge to write papers or compile research information. They shall not plagiarize, quote, or copy other work without giving proper recognition as stated in a standard manual on style.
- be accurate and truthful in all verbal communications.
- respect the opinions of faculty and other students, even when they are not in agreement. Students shall demonstrate self-control and speak professionally at all times.
- use language that is respectful to others. The student shall not use profanity.
Professionalism
The professional behaviors of personal hygiene, timeliness, professional judgment, interpersonal skills, and teamwork may be as important in determining whether a student will be a good health care professional as academic and clinical ability. Health care professionals must have the ability to interact well with other members of the health care team. Students who are unable to satisfactorily address these basic professional issues, either in the class or in their interactions with other Allied Health Technology students, staff and faculty, may be unable to complete this course as well as their chosen program of study.
Technology Requirements
Do not plan to complete your class on smart phones or tablets. Some of the McGraw Hill Connect system functions may not work well or at all on mobile devices. A computer and access to wifi is needed to complete this course.
Computer Specifications Canvas and its hosting infrastructure are designed for maximum compatibility and minimal requirements.
Screen Size A minimum of 1024x600. That is the average size of a netbook. If you want to view Canvas on a device with a smaller screen, we recommend using the Canvas mobile app.

There is no screen reader support for Canvas in Chrome
Special Note on Online Course and Technology Use: Technology and online courses are convenient as you can access them from multiple places and at any time. However, know you are responsible for turning in your work on time regardless of technology or online related difficulty. With this mind, check the website frequently and turn in assignments and tests PRIOR to their due date when possible. When turning in an assignment, consider saving your homework on a USB or home computer first as a precaution.
Academic Violations: Cheating and plagiarism are violations of academic standards and Washington State law (WAC 132P-33-170). What is plagiarism? Submitting any work written by another person, published or not, and claiming it as your own, is considered plagiarism. The first incidence of cheating and/or plagiarism by a student will result in receipt of a "0" for that assignment. Any subsequent incidence of cheating and/or plagiarism by that student will result in failure for the course. Any violation of the law may result in referral to the Yakima Valley Community College disciplinary process.

Acceptable Format
All work must use word-processing. Work in hand-written format is not acceptable. Visual appeal and format is important in final works submitted.
