Real-time & Other Communication Options

Because this is an introductory training course, we are only covering the most essential Canvas basics.  However, it is important to be aware of the additional communication options available to you in Canvas.  The lesson links will give you a quick peek at a few of the more advanced communication options like Conferences, Chat, and Collaborations. This content is being included for informational purposes only.  You will not complete an assignment using this content and you will not be quizzed on it.  For more detailed information on Canvas communication tools, please consult the Canvas Guides Links to an external site..

Conferences, Chat, and Collaborations are considered to be real-time communication options, meaning that students can synchronously communicate or collaborate with each other or with you.  If you choose not to use these tools in your course, it is a good practice to remove them from your course navigation menu.

Another tool worthy of mention here is the ability to record inline media comments (audio only or video with audio).  This feature is an excellent option for leaving student feedback, giving discussions a personalized touch, and for providing audio for written lesson content.

Also of note is the ability to message students directly from the Gradebook using the "Message students who..." feature.  This feature is great for sending quick messages to students who may have scored poorly or forgotten to submit their work.  It's also an easy way to send kudos to students who may have performed well on an assignment or quiz.
