Purpose of Course
The purpose of this course is to prepare you to communicate with health care professionals. Medical terminology enables health professionals from different fields, different specialties, and different countries to communicate clearly and precisely with each other. Every profession has its own language.

Attendance Policy
This course is taught over the Internet. Students are required to log into the course and complete assignments for each module. The students may access the website 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Washington state law SB 5166 requires that YVC provide accommodation for student absences or significant hardships due to reasons of faith or conscience, or for organized religious activities. The YVC procedure, including a form that you may use to request leave day under SB 5166, is available at this link: https://www.cognitoforms.com/YakimaValleyCollege1/AbsenceForReasonsOfFaithOrConscience . Course Outcomes
- Define, pronounce, and spell medical terms.
- Explain how learning medical terminology will increase the ability to communicate effectively with the health care team.
Medical Assisting Competencies
V.C.9 Identify medical terms labeling the word parts
V.C.10 Define medical terms and abbreviations related to all body systems
Evaluation and Grading Policy
Assignments equal 20% of total grade. They are completed online through Canvas in Connect.
Exams equal 80% of total grade. They are completed online through Canvas in Connect. You must go to the proctored computer lab located on Grandview or Yakima campus to complete your exams.
Course Adaptations: If you need course adaptations or accommodations because of a disability, if you have emergency medical information to share with me, or if you need special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, please contact me as soon as possible. Students who need course adaptations or accommodations because of a disability must provide documentation to the instructor during the first week of each quarter so the student and the instructor may work together to achieve the best possible learning environment.
Student Rights & Responsibilities: The current YVCC catalog reviews your rights and responsibilities as a student. A document entitled “Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities” may be obtained from the Student Life Office at the Yakima campus and the main Office at the Grandview campus. Policies regarding academic violations, such as cheating and plagiarism, are outlined.
Academic Violations: Cheating and plagiarism are violations of academic standards and Washington State law (WAC 132P-33-170). What is plagiarism? Submitting any work written by another person, published or not, and claiming it as your own, is considered plagiarism. The first incidence of cheating and/or plagiarism by a student will result in receipt of a "0" for that assignment. Any subsequent incidence of cheating and/or plagiarism by that student will result in failure for the course. Any violation of the law may result in referral to the Yakima Valley Community College disciplinary process.

Institutional Assessment - In addition to the content of each discipline, YVC emphasizes the development of the following three outcomes: Communication (C), Computation/Analytical Reasoning (C/AR) and Human Relations (HR).
