Class Calendar: The first day of class is Monday, April 6, 2020
The last day of class is Thursday, June 4, 2020.
Recommended Materials: headphones, pencil or pen, paper, and notebook for class
Class Requirements: You need to attend class regularly. After 8 absences, you may be dropped from the class. You need to be on time to class and participate in class activities. You also need to practice English outside of class.
Class Rules: No food or drinks in class
No cell phones in class: no texting or phone calls
Do not come to class if you have a fever or a cough.
Call the office or tell your teacher if you are going to be absent.
Class Information: This is an ESL (English as a Second Language) class for adults. We will practice communication in English: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. I-DEA is a 4-quarter class; you may take it for four (4) quarters, with new information each quarter. When you finish I-DEA, you will be placed in the next class that will be best for you.

- Intro to I-DEA and CANVAS
- Places in the Community
- Cross-Cultural Connections
Grades: During the quarter, you will do homework, class activities, and tests that show what you can do in English. I will observe you and correct your written work. Then I will give you a grade for each task you do. This is what the letters mean:
100-90%: A (excellent work)
89-80%: B (very good work)
79-70%: C (good work)
69-60%: D (need more practice)
59-0%: F (failing)
CASAS Post-Testing: If you stop coming to class before the end of the quarter, please talk to me. If you have 45 or more hours, you will need to post test in CASAS. Please notify all of your instructors before you leave.
Attendance and Progress Policies: You need to maintain 75% attendance for the classes you registered for, and you need to make academic progress during the quarter. If you do not attend regularly or make progress, you may be put on Academic Watch. If you are on academic watch for two quarters, you may not be allowed to return to Basic Skills for one year.
Academic Dishonesty: If you are suspected of cheating on a test, you may be asked to retake the test.
Course Catalog Description: A student enrolled in ABESL 014 has basic comprehension, speaking, reading and writing skills. Reading and writing may be at the developing stage, but includes recognition and writing of letters or words. Work in ABESL 014 is oral with an increasing emphasis through the quarter on reading and writing.

Drop Policy: For Classes with Enrollment at Capacity Only: Students not showing up for the first 2 instructional days of the quarter and not having any communication with the instructor regarding the absences will be dropped from the course in order to maximize student enrollment
The Basic Skills Academic Watch Rules help ensure that students enrolled in Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes at Yakima Valley College demonstrate an ability to benefit from the instruction and materials offered.
- If you receive a grade below C- in any class, you will be placed on Academic Watch for that quarter.
- 2 consecutive quarters on Academic Watch = 1 year suspension from Basic Skill Classes
- If you do not show up for class or lab you are registered for, you will receive a grade of “F” for that
- If you stop attending a class or lab, you will get a zero for all remaining assignments. The final grade determines if you are placed on Academic
Appeal Procedures: If you feel you had extenuating circumstances as to why you could not successfully meet the above criteria (family emergency, severe medical issues, etc.) you may appeal to the department for reconsideration of the block by submitting a letter of appeal to the Dean of Basic Skills stating the nature of the extenuating circumstance. Appeals will take into consideration the student’s letter of appeal as well as consultation with the instructor of record. The student will be notified of the decision in writing within two weeks of submission of the written notice of appeal.
Employability and Digital Literacy: In addition to the course content, courses in the College & Career Readiness Division also engage students in developing employability skills and digital literacy.
Student Rights and Responsibilities: The YVC catalog reviews your rights and responsibilities as a student. It also defines various violations (cheating, plagiarizing, etc.) and outlines disciplinary actions.
Absence for Reasons of Faith or Conscience:
Washington state law SB 5166 requires that YVC provide accommodation for student absences or significant hardships due to reasons of faith or conscience, or for organized religious activities. Student leave for reasons of faith or conscience must be requested by the use of this form, within the first two weeks of the quarter.

Student Privacy Policy: Students’ education records, including information regarding immigration status, are protected by federal privacy laws. YVC does not disclose protected student information unless required in response to a lawfully issued subpoena or court order.
