Adult ESL Literacy – Level 4 I-DEA

Class Information: This is an ESL (English as a Second Language) class for adults.  We will practice communication in English: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In each skill area of English, we will be practicing both the fluency and accuracy of your English skills.  I-DEA is a 4-quarter class; you may take it for four (4) quarters, with new information each quarter.  When you finish I-DEA, you will be placed in the next class that will be best for you.

                       

Class Calendar: The first day of class is Tuesday, September 24, 2019.  The last day of class is Thursday, December 5, 2019.                                 

Recommended Materials:  headphones, pencil or pen, paper, and notebook for class

Class Activities:      This class will help you to improve your English skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. You will learn new skills to help you in your everyday life. You will learn about technology by using a computer to do some of your schoolwork.

Assessment:           During the quarter, you will do different tasks (in listening and understanding, speaking, reading, and writing) that show what you can do in English.  I will observe you and correct your written work.  Then I will give you a grade for each task you do.  This is what the letters mean:

Class Requirements:         You need to attend class regularly. After 8 absences, you may be   dropped from the class. You need to be on time to class and participate in class activities. You also need to practice English outside of class.

 

Class Rules: No food or drinks in class

No cell phones in class: no texting or phone calls

Do not come to class if you have a fever or a cough.

Call the office or tell your teacher if you are going to be absent.

 

CASAS Post-Testing:       If you stop coming to class before the end of the quarter, please talk to me. If you have 45 or more hours, you will need to post test in CASAS.  Please notify all of your instructors before you leave.

 

Attendance and Progress Policies:      You need to maintain 75% attendance for the classes you registered for, and you need to make academic progress during the quarter.  If you do not attend regularly or make progress, you may be put on Academic Watch. If you are on academic watch for two quarters, you may not be allowed to return to Basic Skills for one year.

 

Academic Dishonesty:     If you are suspected of cheating on a test, you may be asked to retake the test.
