Instructor:                 Deborah Williams

Course Description:  The course provides an introduction to and some exploration of the following areas: finance, probability, statistics, and modeling (with graphing).

Course Outcomes:    During the course, students will

  • Use mathematical processes and models in solving a variety of financial, statistical, and probability problems
  • Solve problems involving exponential and logarithmic functions
  • Apply percent, rates, and proportions to solve problems

Course Objectives:    Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Use the appropriate technique when working with financial and scientific applications
  • Demonstrate an understanding of statistical processes and their applications
  • Use exponential, logarithmic models for problem solving both by common rules of doubling and halving as well as algebraically solving equations
  • Use the fundamental counting principle, permutation and combinations in problem solving

Prerequisites:            MATH 091, MATH 092, MATH 094 or MATH 095 with a grade of C (2.0) or better or YVCC placement into MATH 107.

Tests:                        There will be four unit exams and a comprehensive final exam.  Be sure to show your work for your solutions (-40 points for not showing work).  If you miss an announced test without making prior arrangements with me, there will be no makeup test.  Also, all tests and homework assignments are to be done in pencil or they will not be accepted!!

Homework:               Homework will be assigned periodically.  Write your homework assignments on your assignment schedule, maintain your homework in a notebook, and bring it to class every day.  At various times throughout the quarter, selected assignments will be collected and graded.  All work must be shown on your homework pages.  Homework will be graded on correctness, completeness, and neatness.  Collected homework will be due at the beginning of class and will be marked down 25% for each class day it is late.  If you are tardy or absent on a day that homework is collected, then your homework will be considered late.  It is your responsibility to keep up with the assigned homework.  Whenever you don't understand something, feel free to ask questions.

Attendance Policy:    Two consecutive days of unexcused absence any time during the quarter can result in your being dropped from the class.  In the event that absenteeism or tardiness becomes a problem, I reserve the right to implement the use of quizzes given at the beginning of class.
