Research trades and certifications.

Not everyone needs a college degree. Plumbers, chefs and mechanics usually train at trade or vocational schools. Licensed practical nurses, dental assistants and emergency medical technicians train through advanced certifications.

Trade schools offer hands-on training, lower costs and faster time to employment than traditional degrees. On the other hand, those who earn college degrees usually earn more and have more employment opportunities.

Before signing up for training through a trade/vocational school or certification program, find out:

  1. Is there a professional organization that certifies the training?
  2. What is the reputation of the trainer or trade school?
  3. What can you expect to learn?
  4. How do the costs for attendance, continuing education and testing compare to the expected wages?
  5. Is training necessary or can you learn on the job?
