Loan Forgiveness for Public Service

The income-based repayment plan allows you to qualify for federal loan forgiveness if you work in a qualifying public service job. You must work in the field you choose for the minimum required period, and you must make regular payments for at least 10 years. You may not want to choose a career just to reduce your loans. It’s good to know, however, that you may have the option of working in a field you really care about with the added benefit that your loan can be forgiven. Separate alternatives also are available for teaching in low-income areas or in subjects that are understaffed.
