THIS IS IMPORTANT PRACTICE applying all types of membrane transport to different cells and conditions.
When analyzing these think of 2 main things:
- What is the nature of the substance moving?
- Can it pass freely through the membrane?
- Does it need a channel?
- Or is it too large for a channel?
- Is it moving with or against its gradient?
- If it is moving from low concentration to high then it is active transport
- if it is moving from high concentration to low, then it is passive transport
These questions ask what TYPE of transport is involved, but you should also be able to decide what DIRECTION it moves in many cases.
