Academic Program Review Workshop Outlines

Introduction to Workshops & Purpose

The Academic Program Review Work Group has developed Professional Development workshops to help faculty gain a shared understanding of the Academic Program Review process as well as foundational knowledge of learning outcomes, aligning assessments to outcomes and evaluating student learning, and improving teaching practices.

Each year we ask that all full-time faculty review the workshop material to "brush up" on the information and/or complete the workshops. Faculty can access the workshops in the Assessment Canvas Task Course that corresponds with the current academic year. The course can be found in their Canvas Course list and will be titled based on their assigned APR Group. If the course is not available in Canvas, contact Stephanie O'Brine at sobrine@yvcc.edu to be added to the correct Canvas course.

Workshop I Outline

Purpose

The purpose of this workshop is to lay a foundation for the next steps in our YVC Assessment process. We will present definitions of terms needed to understand our project: Triennial Program Review. We learn how to write well-written outcomes. A shared understanding of well-written outcomes is essential to analyzing and collecting outcomes data. Reviewing student learning outcomes data and narrowing equity gaps improves instruction and student success for all student groups.

Outcomes

By completing this workshop Faculty will...

  1. identify definitions of essential vocabulary for the Triennial Program Review process.
  2. combine a value proposition theory (Simon Sinek) and backward design (Ralph Tyler).
  3. develop a meaningful course learning outcome (Robert Mager).
  4. align an assessment tool to outcomes.

Reviewing student learning outcomes data improves instructor and student success. Reviewing Program Learning Outcomes will be part of the YVC Program Review process beginning in Fall 2021.

Outcomes

By completing this workshop Faculty will...

  1. combine Universal Design for Learning (UDL) with Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational Objectives concepts.
  2. write or revise meaningful assignment-level learning outcomes.
  3. insert a Program Learning Outcomes tracking template into a Canvas course.
  4. review a summary of the YVC Program Review process.

Workshop III Outline

Purpose

The purpose of this workshop is to continue our professional development in the YVC Assessment process. We will learn about equity in assessment and explore Academic Program Review (APR) data as it currently exists for your program. Reviewing student learning outcomes data improves instructor and student success. Reviewing Program Learning Outcomes is a part of the YVC Program Review process.

Outcomes

By completing this workshop you will...

  1. be able to define equity-minded assessment.
  2. identify strategies to involve students in the assessment process.
  3. locate your program's assessment data.
  4. discuss that data with respect to equity.

Workshop IV Outline

Purpose

This workshop continues our professional development in the YVC Assessment process. In the past, we have explored multiple teaching and learning strategies that (hopefully!) set the stage for Academic Program Review projects. Now, we will learn about the role "authentic assessment" can play in teaching and learning.

Outcomes

By completing this workshop, you will be able to...

  1. define authentic assessment.
  2. identify strategies to create more authentic assessments.
  3. compare and contrast indirect and direct evidence.
  4. create/revise/identify an authentic assessment strategy you might implement now.
