Adding Images & Media
Keep it interesting & usable!
As long as it is not overused, most students benefit from experiencing some visual variety. You can shake it up and keep your course interesting by adding relevant images and/or media to your course. Images and media come in many formats. In Canvas you can embed images, link to videos, embed videos, record inline media comments, and upload media files anywhere that the Rich Content Editor is available.
When selecting images and media content for your course, it is very important to use materials that are not copyright restricted and to always attribute/cite the author of the content you use. Just because an image or video is on the web doesn't mean it is legally usable, especially in electronic delivery formats like learning management systems (LMS, i.e. Canvas). Please visit your campus librarian for assistance finding and citing OER images and media for your courses.
Also consider the accessibility of your course technology and media choices. Ask yourself...is this tool accessible to students with sight, hearing, psychological, or physical impairments? And remember, it is especially important to provide an alternative means of understanding for any media or other visuals you may use like tables, charts, graphs, and images . For videos, this means captioning. For tables, charts, graphs, and images this means adding alternative text. Responsibly selecting tools and resources that benefit all students is a proactive approach to course design. Checking your work using the built in Accessibility Checker in Canvas will help you create content that is usable by all students.
